Rehearsing

Rehearsing

When I wonder why I’m writing words of whispered warmth and love
To a world that keeps on turning under diamond skies above
I just turn to every poet that I read and keep inside
And I see that all their efforts simply beg to be replied

So I pick a pointed pencil and I push it ‘cross the page
And I hope to put my feelings at the centre of the stage
For the poets that I’m reading always fill my heart with joy
And I feel that in their presence I’m a silly little boy

I must practice all my writing until every word is right
And the poems I’m producing set the hearts of friends alight
For I have to pay for pleasures in the only way I know
With a wagonload of wordplay like an avalanche of snow

Now it seems that I’m addicted to the music of the verse
All the time that I’m not working is the time that I rehearse
One day I’ll be a poet who has things that he must say
But until the day I get there I’ll just put my words at play
