Remember the Golden Rule

All through my life I’ve come across advisers
Who knew a rule that ought to guide my life –
“Be generous” or “Be a careful miser”,
“Don’t give an inch” or “Keep away from strife”.

These kindly souls are certainly persistent,
Theirs is THE way, the ONLY way that’s right.
Too bad their rules are firmly inconsistent
And mostly inconvenient or trite.

I’m wise enough to smile and thank them kindly,
Politeness costs me nothing, by and large.
My courtesy won’t mean I follow blindly
I’m not about to put a fool in charge.

The only “Golden Rule” that I’ll remember
Is don’t wear shorts in Scotland in December.
