River Music

River Music

When the spirit of the river stroked her fiddle with her bow,
Far above the Moon was spellbound by the sounds she didn’t know,
And the stars who lived to court her couldn’t get a second glance;
As the silver light of midnight watched the water-maiden’s dance.

   If you wander by a river as it tumbles from the hills,
   And you hold your breath to listen to the music that it spills,
   You may gaze around and wonder if your eyes have learned to lie;
   For the Moon so far above you is now waltzing through the sky.

Every note the spirit conjured floated upwards in the night,
And the ringing of the ripples joined the melody in flight.
Every nightingale fell silent and the blackbirds ceased to sing,
As the damsel wrapped their senses in her web of silver string.

   If you’ve ever heard your lover breathing softly in their sleep,
   And you’ve joined them in their dreaming as your souls began to leap,
   Then you may have heard the music that the river spirit played
   To the Moon so soft and silver and the stars the night arrayed.

Long ago when life seemed easy and the nights weren’t filled with noise
There were spirits in each river and they each learned subtle ploys.
They competed for attention and they made our world a shrine;
While the Moon who loved their music poured each maid a glass of wine.
