Ten thousand guns have fallen silent now
And left a sea of broken mud and wire
The men who cower are left to question how
They’ll ever face another night of fire
Too many British soldiers cannot leave
They’re left to rot in innocence and mud
Too many women left at home must grieve
At all this pointless waste of soldiers’ blood
In years to come the scene will be replayed
With poppies growing out of fertile earth
Pastoral beauty where these men were flayed
To show what all these lives should have been worth
A symphony of khaki stained with red
Where half a generation left its dead
Author notes
Red and Khaki means only one thing to me
And that was the prompt
