Sad Stories

Our lives are built from intimate connections,
From single words that grow into a book.
We read the tales, ignoring imperfections,
And savour lines that need a second look.
The library of life is ever changing,
We borrow books to study year by year.
Librarians are always rearranging
The catalogue of volumes we hold dear.
Not every book can have a happy ending,
The hero may not get to kiss the girl,
Some stories stop with happiness still pending,
The harmony reducing to a skirl.
We’re left to cry the sentences unwritten,
To rework plots when scenes no longer fit.
