Watching cricket in the summer, eating ice-cream, drinking tea
And enjoying doing nothing, loving you sat next to me.
In the sunshine feeling happy, there’s a gentle cooling breeze,
And your softly sleepy breathing sets forever at its ease.
Hear the sounds of wood on leather, and a strangled screamed OWZAT
While I doze away the fixture hidden underneath my hat.
Or a walk between the beeches in a dark and friendly wood
Holding hands like little children, doing everything we should.
Watching sticklebacks and tiddlers in a tiny little stream,
All of England in the summer seems to come and fill my dream.
Wearing boots to climb a mountain, nearly naked on the sand,
Candy-floss and rock bananas and a nearly in tune band.
Take you rowing on the river, no the Serpentine I think
Then a plate of something sticky and a glass of wine to drink.
It’s as cold as Santa’s garden, and the clouds obscure the Moon
But I’m lazing in the sunlight of a Summer afternoon.
