She Rescued Me

I met her on the way between the trees
She touched me and she showed me to the light
A tender touch to lead me to my ease

The strains of life had forced me to my knees
The forest seemed to close as dark as night
I met her as I strayed between the trees

I’d lost my confidence by slow degrees
I needed love or I would never write
Her tender touch would lead me to my ease

She came, the gentle answer to my pleas
When I most needed help to lift my plight
We met as I was lost between the trees

Her pleasant laugh at first just seemed to tease
Before she came to lift me to the height
To touch me and to lead me to my ease

At last her form was close enough to seize
Her beauty made the darkest clearing bright
She set me on my way between the trees
The tender touch that lead me to my ease
Author notes
For reasons that escape me I have written another Villanelle, 6 three line
stanzas rhymed A1bA2 abA1 abA2 abA1 abA2 abA1A2 where A1 and A2 represent the
entire line. Although there are no rules about length or meter of Villanelle
lines I have gone for iambic pentameter because I like it, This poem was
written for a contest that said “strict adherence to the form”, which doesn’t
mean much to me but I took it to mean no variation of the refrain lines, I
prefer a little flexibility as shown in many Villanelles by past greats (and
present ones) the poem as it was for the contest is at the end of these notes.
The poem, in a form I do not love or write well, is inspired by Nutting_by
Wordsworth, not my favourite poem by not my favourite poet and a picture of a
clearly artificial avenue in the trees, so overall I don’t really know why I
wrote it, ah well, such is life maybe I need a spirit in the woods to rescue
me.
