Slow growing

When we were young I watched as we both grew
From childhood friends to strangers in the street.
I saw your face on every girl I’d meet
But they were not the you that I once knew.
For many years I thought that we were through.
This love song, never started, was complete;
A memory that always tasted sweet,
A ray of light when I was feeling blue.

Then yesterday you called me on the phone
And asked me if you ever crossed my mind.
You told me that you always felt alone,
That there was someone left you had to find.
At last I know that we are fully grown –
A love has bloomed from what we left behind.

Author notes
Needs a bit of spit and polish I think.
It is a basically Petrachan sonnet (abbaabba octet) with a cdcdcd sestet,
sometimes known as a Spanish sonnet.
