So Long Ago

So long ago you knew that you would shine,
You knew the truth, the way that life should be.
You’d show us all that we could be divine;
The human race embracing liberty.
So long ago you knew you’d get it right,
Not lose your way the way your parents strayed.
You’d lead the world to everlasting light;
The rules you’d dreamt would always be obeyed.
You were a fool, but could not know that then,
All men are fools, they bumble through their years.
There’ll never be a perfect regimen
No life’s complete without its share of tears.
So long ago I too believed I knew
And like a fool I still believe it’s true.
