Soaring

Standing for the first time on the cliffs above a bay
Staring down at tiny waves that seemed so far away
Gazing out to Ireland ‘neath a pretty cloud flecked sky
I knew from deep conviction that all men were mean to fly
My lover now is walking on a lonely sun-kissed beach
Strands of cloud just flecked with gold that almost seem in reach
Three thousand miles and many years between each ocean view
With all the distance in between I still can fly to you
Across the skies of many lands we’ve soared high out of sight
The magic in the words we spun our only means of our flight
When we first met when I was young, the world was fresh and green
And now from high above the clouds the beauty still is seen
For lovers and for poets who can only walk on land
The secret is to close your eyes and hold each other’s hand
The open them in poetry and all there is to see
The landscape of one million dreams as dreamed by you and me
