Solving the puzzle

If three across is something something c
And means a tree that grows on mountainsides
And seven down cannot begin with e
Then I think eight across is “virgin brides”
That anagram looks like it’s from the Greek
And I don’t know a word that means unpaired
Can you remember what’s the French for speak
Or what’s the middle word of eighteen squared?
If I can solve it all there’s just a hope
That I can win a trip to visit you
But first just tell me what’s a phalarope?
And Hartebeest are smaller than gnu?
But there’s a bigger puzzle in my life
How can I ask if you will be my wife?
