We all of us are built from parts of ghosts of long dead stars
That shone in aeons long before we knew
Explosions ripped these stars to dust and we are left as scars
The ancient is transformed to all that’s new
Each part of me each part of you is old beyond all thought
We’ve seen the dawn of galaxies and more
Our bones were born in times before primaeval forces fought
A history so great we can’t ignore
A world that’s built from such a past is glory to behold
And we who are its children know its worth
The basest of the metals and the noblest the gold
Are condensed from the dust that rained on Earth
In future we will scatter into atoms lost in space
Our residue will travel far away
Till in some distant region we are settled into place
On planets where it seems alright to stay
We’ll walk again as creatures who can gaze out on the stars
And learn that we were born so long ago
In other parts of space where all that’s left are ancient scars
And nothing like the Earth is left on show
