Sussex in Summer

I love to sit atop a Sussex Down
And gaze at patchwork fields of every hue.
The moving sun makes every moment new
While colours wash away the deepest frown.
With yellow squares of mustard seed and rape
And golden wheat that’s ready any day.
A thousand different greens all seem to play
In fields of every crazy paving shape.

I cannot name a colour not in sight,
Within this scene that keeps a nation fed,
Beneath a canopy of blue and white
And flecked by cottage roofs of fiery red.
No other nation ever gets this right;
It’s English countryside that fills my head.
