To Each Their Own

Not every thought I have arrives in rhyme,
Nor every dream in perfect metered verse.
But given just a modicum of time,
I’ll find the words I need are in my purse.

I like to try to write without these props,
To prove it’s not the music people read,
But usually it seems my free verse flops,
Where metered rhyme is likely to succeed.

I’d never say my choice applies to you,
Free verse can be sublime in certain hands,
Please do not hear the fools who “always knew”
But find a friend who clearly understands.

You shouldn’t try to be another’s clone —
In poetry and life, to each their own.
