An age they say when folly’s passed me by
And wisdom sits where impulse used to rule
Yet still I dream that I can learn to fly
I’m older but at heart I’m still a fool.
I cannot say what change has come to me
Perhaps I’m rounder than I used to be

I try to play my part in many ways
I’ve learned some useful tricks across the years
I’m not so old I’m counting off my days
Infirmity and age are not my fears
This age of man seems comfortable to me
I’ve found the time to write some poetry

My hair may show a tendency to grey
I run a little slower for a bus
But I have learned contentment in a way
A little love is worth a lot of fuss
I’m middle aged but always young at heart
Today is when the future has to start

Author notes
The form is the “Venus and Adonis stanza” 6 line stanzas, sixains, of iambic
pentameter rhymed ababcc apparently invented by Shakespeare for his epic poem
Venus and Adonis.

The prompt is from Shakespeare’s seven ages of man …

And then the justice,
In fair round belly with good capon lined,
With eyes severe and beard of formal cut,
Full of wise saws and modern instances;
And so he plays his part.
