Too much to bear

I couldn’t speak, my words would be too much,
Her pain too deep for sympathy to ease.
My one resort to let my fingers touch,
The hands that tried to hold her shaking knees.

Her sunken eyes, were red as burning coal,
Her shoulders heaved, but there was not a sound.
How can you help when someone’s lost their soul,
A treasure that, when lost, can not be found.

They’d driven off with jokes and happiness,
The sky was clear, a perfect summer day.
A phone-call made her world a hopeless mess
A careless fool had ripped her heart away.

In time she’ll find the words to help her feel,
Emotions that, for now, are only real.
