The pink tinged clouds now fade to grey
As hard edged shadows fade away
And so we bid farewell to day
And greet the coming night

With Venus twinkling into view
The constellations form a queue
To paint the star-flecked sky anew
That covers us at night

The thinnest crescent of the Moon
Will wane to darkness all too soon
While lovers of the dark commune
With phantoms of the night

You fools who live your summer dreams
While washed by golden daylight beams
Ignore this magic as it streams
From corners of the night

Now rest awhile and try to see
The great nocturnal poetry
That sets the true romantic free
To roam across the night

When Cupid clad in sable sheets
Pursues our hearts down silent streets
The reticence of day retreats
And lovers own the night
