True Love

He claimed she was unfaithful so, for love, she had to die,
What twisted kind of lover could he be?
To serve his self importance he was happy to deny
Her chance of happiness and liberty.
True love is not destructive, it serves only to enhance
The lives of those who feel it, and to give a second chance.
He claimed it was his duty to remove the dreadful sleight;
That “crime of passion” couldn’t be a crime.
But any honest lover knows that it cannot be right
To deny their partner’s chance to feel sublime.
True love must be unselfish, it gives more than it can take.
To harm the one you live for is to force your heart to break.
The jealous are deluded, they defeat what they protect,
You cannot harm the one you truly love.
Be wary of your feelings and be certain to reject
The urge to give that single angry shove.
True love is born of beauty, of compassion and of joy;
No man can be a lover with a passion to destroy.
Author notes
No lover, if he be of good faith, and sincere, will deny he would prefer to see
his mistress dead than unfaithful. ~ Marquis De Sade
To put it mildly, I disagree!!!
