The cheerful pessimist

I am the cheerful pessimist
There’s no way we can survive
And every year I’m shocked to find
That I am still alive

I am the cheerful pessimist
The future’s very bleak
But then Saturday comes round again
I’ve lived another week

I am the cheerful pessimist
The world has gone to pot
I knew that I’d go broke last year
“Cor blimey!” I did not!

I am the cheerful pessimist
It’s raining for an hour
It turns out its not Noah’s flood
Just a passing English shower

I am the cheerful pessimist
With Tony still in power
Its amazing to discover
There’s no new wars this hour

I am the cheerful pessimist
The way the world is warming
I’m shocked to see a grasshopper
Not a plague of locusts swarming

I am the cheerful pessimist
No-one will know my name
But every Monday morning
They all greet me just the same

I am the cheerful pessimist
It’s an ugly world I fear
Then a lady walks along the road
With legs right up to here

I am the cheerful pessimist
Nothing is ever pleasant
Then the postman’s at the door
With a lovely birthday present

I am the cheerful pessimist
No-one ever reads my rhymes
Who knows that may be the editor
“Can we quote you in the Times?”

I am the cheerful pessimist
It’s not how you were taught
Pessimists can always smile
Life’s so much better than we thought
