The best that we can get?

Democracy’s the best that you can get
That’s not the same as saying that it’s good
In power the opposition will forget
To do the things they promised that they would
“No tax increases ever on our watch”
Translates as raising every tax in sight
They’ll slap a bit on every sip of scotch
While friends of theirs find rises rather slight
Or start a war they cannot justify
The evidence is secret anyway
It doesn’t really matter if they lie
With luck we won’t remember what they say
The only thing I’ll say is that I’m sure
Without a vote they’d cheat us even more!
