When bombers rained their venom from the sky
The fall of France meant Britain stood alone
And Hitler seemed about to take the throne
The few who flew defended Britain’s sky
The Hurricanes and Spitfires had to fly
So Germany had no chance to invade
And every day raw courage was displayed

Around the World these heroes should be praised
They won the time for armies to be raised

They had to knock these scourges to the floor

And stop the Lutwaffe seizing air control
A tiny band to hold that vital role

The battle won the World still had to cry
Another thousand battles to be fought
And millions more would die as nations sought

Seventy years ago today Winston Churchill made his famous speech including the
line “Never in the field of human conflict, was so much owed, by so many, to so
few”, thereby creating a name for the pilots of RAF fighter command, flying
repeated sorties against the odds to deny Hitler and Goering Air superiority
over South Eastern England in what became known as “The Battle of Britain”
