He sits and smiles as though he cannot see –
But memories are clearer than his eyes.
Inside his mind, in perfect clarity,
He visits friends to make his last goodbyes.
His wife is there, in Summer on the beach,
Their daughter, laughing, buried in the sand.
And now their son’s first concert is in reach,
So proudly on the stage before the band.
The pain of war, the ecstasy of peace;
Today is not as real as yesterday.
In time he knows the daily grind will cease,
He’s ready now to gently slip away.
He’ll keep the only treasures that he owns –
His images of life in sepia tones.
