The Old Caretaker

His habits never changed across the years
He strode his route without a single pause
For him the future held no hidden fears
He would not change no matter what the cause
The school was old and filled with childhood dreams
Yet in his face was not the slightest smile
He took detachment to the last extremes
And friendly chat would never be his style
And yet he loved his charges in his way
He did his job and they were not aware
Of how he gave them all his everyday
He felt their school was always in his care
And nothing changed the night his body died
It’s still his school and he still walks inside
