Remembering the future in the promise of the past
When all of our tomorrows were today
Two actors in rehearsals who are sure they’ve been miscast
But keen to see the progress of the play
No life is ever easy but it’s better lived with two
And I have always wanted mine with you
We met before the troubles of the World could touch our hearts
And well before we knew what wouldn’t be
Our ignorance was blissful and we drove in fits and starts
Towards our unimagined destiny
You told me that you loved me when the bus had broken down
I had no ring but made a paper crown
And now we’re busy dying as our days turn into years
Still looking for the spark we never lost
You laugh to see me happy and I sit and cry your tears
When little wins demand too high a cost
I don’t believe it’s over while there’s lips that need a kiss
Though not our dream the best of life is this
Author notes
I wrote these second and third stanzas this way, with a changed meter by
mistake,
We met before the troubles of the World could touch our hearts
And well before we knew what wouldn’t be
Our ignorance was blissful and we drove in fits and starts
Towards our unimagined destiny
You told me that you loved me when the bus had broken down
I hadn’t got a ring but made a free newspaper crown
And now we’re busy dying as our days turn into years
Still looking for the spark we never lost
You laugh to see me happy and I sit and cry your tears
When little wins demand too high a cost
I don’t believe it’s over while there’s lips that need a kiss
It isn’t all we dreamed of but the best of life is this
