The rarest gift

A trophy that too few of us will lift
Is dangled by the gods before our eyes
To fall in love and marry is a gift
To stay in love for life a special prize
You’ll fight through years of sacrifice and thrift
If you’ve the wit to bend and compromise

Your children grow and soon they move away
With luck they stay as friends forevermore
The babies that you taught to work and play
Become the family that you adore
You wake up to the question every day
What challenges has life still got in store

If I grow old I hope I’ll look to see
Such ideal tales throughout my family

Author notes
A sonnet (14 lines of iambic pentameter with a regular rhyme scheme and a
volta) constructed by adding an extra ababab sestet to the start of an ottava
rima.
