The Schönbrunn Waltz

While the air fills with scents from the gardens outside
And the hint of a waltz hits your ears,
You are carried away by the beauty allied
To the ghosts of imperial years.
There are rooms where the gilding is washed on the walls,
Like the spray from Niagara’s mist,
And the echoes of Strauss come with intricate calls
To the grottos where princesses kissed.
Through the grounds where the Emperors walked in the spring,
To the follies their ancestors made,
Past collections of trees where exotic birds sing
And the lawns where the peacocks displayed.
In the Tiergarten animals hide from the wild
But they’re making a show just for you,
In the Schönbrunn you’ll be an excitable child
And the best of the old will seem new.

Author notes
Sorry it’s not a sonnet, but I can’t think of the Schönbrunn Palace without
dancers twirling to a concert of Viennese waltzes and polkas
