The Sonnet’s Sonnet

The sonnet is the perfect form of verse –
With fourteen lines of sweetly metered rhyme;
Iambic feet, not overlong or terse,
In Shakespeare’s hands it made the language chime.
This English form’s my favourite every time
The first eight lines set up the tale that’s told.
A natural flow with crisp alternate rhyme
Ensures the poet’s message is well sold.
Then at line nine (though this can move a bit)
It’s time for you to change the poem’s mood.
Alternate views, or arguments, could fit
Maybe a twist that’s artfully construed.
And then the end – the couplet is the key –
That can unlock the finest poetry.

An English sonnet described in an English sonnet
Rereading this I am unhappy about reusing the “ime” rhyme. I shall think on it.
