The tragedy of war

Each morning she sat by the banks of the stream
Lost in her love as he lay far away
She wrote how she felt in the words of her dream
Knew he’d return to his lover one day

The lines that she wrote were so full of her hopes
Love and delight were both clear on the page
Shackled to him by the softest of ropes
A story of love that can mark any age

Fighting for country and honour and glory
She was the prize at the back of his mind
All that he dreamt for the end of his story
Was locked in the love that he knew he would find

How could he know through his battles so brave
Hers was the life that nobody could save
