I have never known silence
my head fills with the sounds
of my thoughts.
Echoes of streams of ideas
as they bounce off the edges
of the well
and drop at last
into the water far below.
Voices that talk to me
in rhyme or prose.
That play with my day
and tease and please
me with words.
Snatches of every song
all of every poem
recordings of my memories
all the time.
And then there are the sounds
the air breathing as it runs
around the house.
The floor sighing in the dark
when all the house is asleep
The birds, singing and fighting
Cars and lorries and trains
far away.
And my dreams, loudest of all
are my dreams.
Searching for a way to escape
they laugh and shout and scream
trying to be me.
I have never known silence.
