What chance have we?

What chance have we?

All men, they say, are equal at their birth,
And all of them entitled to be free,
But things are rarely simple on this Earth
What chance is there of true fraternity?

My liberties may brush against your own,
Equality for you may injure me.
When all the dice that we can find are thrown,
What chance is there of true fraternity?

If you believe you’re right and I am wrong,
We’ll never find a way we can agree.
Three words can surely help us get along:
They’re liberty, equality, fraternity.

If equal men can keep each other free
We have a chance of true fraternity.
