What’s left

I close my eyes and wonder who I am
Behind the smiles the flirts and pretty rhymes
Perhaps I am a charlatan, a sham
Or who you turn to at the worst of times
I know I’m not the me I thought I’d be
But happy to be known as Jeff or Dad
The secret me still waiting to get free
I hope most people think that I’m “not bad”
But in my dreams there is another soul
The inner voice that wants to find a life
To find a place to grow and finish whole
Where I can live and love away from strife
I’ll cut away all dreams and “let’s pretend”
I hope that what is left is called “A friend”
