{"id":2445,"date":"2023-11-26T20:31:30","date_gmt":"2023-11-26T20:31:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nicewaistcoat.com\/wordpress\/?page_id=2445"},"modified":"2023-11-28T23:09:03","modified_gmt":"2023-11-28T23:09:03","slug":"the-real-power-in-the-land","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/nicewaistcoat.com\/wordpress\/the-poems\/the-real-power-in-the-land\/","title":{"rendered":"The real power in the land."},"content":{"rendered":"<p> The real power in the land.<br \/>\nby cricketjeff on March 1, 2008.\u00a0 \u00a9 Jeff Green, All rights reserved<br \/>\nThe jester kept the King within his place<br \/>\nBy showing off the faults of all his court<br \/>\nWith witty rhyme and gestures of the face<\/p>\n<p>He lanced the boil of disputes that were fought<br \/>\nAnd showed the court the lessons that were taught<br \/>\nBy keeping all as wit with banners furled<br \/>\nThe Jesters of the court still rule the world<\/p>\n<p>The modern jesters think that satire&#8217;s new<br \/>\nThat they invented rule by ridicule<br \/>\nBut both of these were used by quite a few<br \/>\nLong before the moderns went to school<\/p>\n<p>Remember then to keep the golden rule<br \/>\nThough politicians think they rule the land<br \/>\nIt&#8217;s the jester&#8217;s job to see we understand<\/p>\n<p>When Charlemaine was rowed along the Seine<br \/>\nBy Kings and Dukes of lands within his sway<br \/>\nThe Jesters didn&#8217;t have to take the strain<br \/>\nThey kept the gathered armies in their play<\/p>\n<p>United Nations need to listen once again<br \/>\nA ruler who is laughing will not kill<br \/>\nThe Jesters are the ones in power still<br \/>\n Author notes<br \/>\nI wanted a verse form that was old enough to have been commonly used by the<br \/>\nJesters of the middle ages.<br \/>\nRime Royale fits the bill, I suppose you could call it Ottava Rima&#8217;s<br \/>\ngrandfather, it is a septet form, usually used in chains and with the septets<br \/>\ndivided into 4s and 3s.
