{"id":2816,"date":"2023-11-26T20:28:12","date_gmt":"2023-11-26T20:28:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nicewaistcoat.com\/wordpress\/?page_id=2816"},"modified":"2023-11-28T22:06:26","modified_gmt":"2023-11-28T22:06:26","slug":"just-one-more-death","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/nicewaistcoat.com\/wordpress\/j-poems\/just-one-more-death\/","title":{"rendered":"Just one more death?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> Just one more death?<br \/>\nby cricketjeff on June 4, 2008.\u00a0 \u00a9 Jeff Green, All rights reserved<br \/>\nBut why did they let him speak?<br \/>\nOn the scaffold the day he was hanged<br \/>\nWas the rule of the Fascists so weak<br \/>\nTo let such a crowd be harangued?<br \/>\n     I stand for Freedom and for right<br \/>\n     Against the fascists and the rest<br \/>\n     So come to join us in the fight<br \/>\n     All Yugoslavs must pass this test<br \/>\nA Croat can&#8217;t talk to a Serb?<br \/>\nThey&#8217;d never believe what he says<br \/>\nDid they think that he wouldn&#8217;t perturb<br \/>\nThe sway that they held in those days<br \/>\n     We have to fight for home and life<br \/>\n     A thousand years we were suppressed<br \/>\n     Now Tito leads us through our strife<br \/>\n     It&#8217;s Partisans against the rest<br \/>\nThe crowd heard the words that he said<br \/>\nThis Croat their leaders condemned<br \/>\nHis words would live after he&#8217;s dead<br \/>\nThis orator should have been stemmed<br \/>\n     Now I must die so we go free<br \/>\n     My death is only one protest<br \/>\n     All come and fight for liberty<br \/>\n     So Yugoslavs can&#8217;t be suppressed<br \/>\nThey hanged him before he was due<br \/>\nBut his words were alive in the crowd<br \/>\nThough directly were heard by so few<br \/>\nThe echoes were long-lived and loud<br \/>\n     The Partisans would win their war<br \/>\n     So Southern Slavs survived that test<br \/>\n     A scaffold speech none could ignore<br \/>\n     Was more than just a lone protest<br \/>\n Author notes<br \/>\nStill being worked on and notes and picture to come<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Just one more death? by cricketjeff on June 4, 2008.\u00a0 \u00a9 Jeff Green, All rights reserved But why did they let him speak?
