Robin Hood

There’s legends of heroes who fought for the poor,
\nWhen England was under Prince John.
\nKing Richard was fighting the Turk and the Moor,
\nWhile John thought he’d try out a con.<\/p>\n
An outlaw named Robin, a Saxon of note,
\nDecided the taxes weren’t right.
\nHe’d fought for King Richard but hadn’t a vote
\nInstead he decided to fight.<\/p>\n
The Sheriff collected, and kept back a share,
\nThe monies to send to the Prince
\nBut taxing the poorest was never quite fair
\nAnd soon they were starting to wince.<\/p>\n
So Robin decided a tax of his own –
\nThat only the Sheriff should pay.
\nThe money collected was only on loan
\nThe Sheriff would lose it next day.<\/p>\n
At Sherwood there’s forest around all the towns
\nAnd Robin was King of the woods.
\nThe Sheriff collected some thousands of crowns
\nAnd Robin collected the goods.<\/p>\n
He met little John in a fight on a log.
\nLike children they wouldn’t back down.
\nThey ended up dirty and stood in the bog
\nBut laughing not trying to drown.<\/p>\n
Soon fat Friar Tuck had been hounded from church,
\nHis preaching had got out of line.
\nHe met up with Robin, conducted a search
\nFor the smell of the deer and for wine.<\/p>\n
Then Alan A’Dale who would sing of their deeds
\nAnd Much, who’s the son of a Miller
\nAnd many a peasant with terrible needs
\nOr labelled a thief or a killer.<\/p>\n
The Saxons still bridled beneath Norman yoke,
\nThe Sheriff and henchmen drove hard.
\nThere is only so far you can push normal folk
\nBefore they will form their own guard.<\/p>\n
The stories have endings that never read true,
\nOf pardons and drinks with the King
\nOf ladies named Marion, grand castles too
\nBut you shouldn’t believe everything.<\/p>\n
King Richard returned but he didn’t live long
\nAnd John, as the King lost the lot.
\nMagna Carta was signed but he still got things wrong
\nAnd the Kingdom’s still going to rot.<\/p>\n
Now all of these stories may be make believe
\nBut tourists all flock to his oak.
\nAnd millions of visitors cannot conceive
\nThat Robin is not a real bloke!<\/p>\n
