\nThe Moon looks down as we look up
\nTo see her rule the sky
\nWe’ll toast her from a silver cup
\nAnd ask her how to fly<\/p>\n
She sees the world from up above
\nAnd smiles at what she sees
\nHer light ignites our thoughts of love
\nAnd puts us at our ease<\/p>\n
The flowers in her silver glow
\nAre not a patch on you
\nThe beauty in the smile you show
\nHas told me what to do<\/p>\n
I take you in my arms to kiss
\nAnd feel you on my lips
\nThere’s never been a warmth like this
\nExcept where moonlight drips<\/p>\n
It seems this kiss could last for years
\nBut we need something more
\nSomehow our clothing disappears
\nTo let our spirits soar<\/p>\n
And all your skin sets me on fire
\nYou sigh your joy aloud
\nThe modest Moon sees our desire
\nAnd slips behind a cloud.<\/p>\n

\nIf you want a beautiful simple and time honoured form, this is for you. It is
\ncalled Ballad Measure (or sometimes English Hymn Measure).
\nIt is older than Shakespeare and almost every decent poet (and millions of not
\nso decent ones!) for a thousand years has written in it from time to time.<\/p>\n
The dreaded rules!
\nStrictly speaking, and mine here is pretty strict, it is in alternating iambic
\ntetrameter and termeter. Forget those names!
\nThink eight syllable and six syllable lines. Each line with a di-DUM di-DUM
\nbeat.
\nThe eight syllable lines either rhyme with each other or don’t, the six
\nsyllable lines rhyme. Clever poets throw in internal rhymes and alliterations
\nand all the fireworks they can find, doesn’t matter the simplest ballads can be
\nthe most beautiful. They can be as short as eight lines or last for years.
