{"id":3017,"date":"2023-11-26T20:27:55","date_gmt":"2023-11-26T20:27:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nicewaistcoat.com\/wordpress\/?page_id=3017"},"modified":"2023-11-27T22:42:57","modified_gmt":"2023-11-27T22:42:57","slug":"as-i-walk","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/nicewaistcoat.com\/wordpress\/a-poems\/as-i-walk\/","title":{"rendered":"As I walk"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> As I walk<br \/>\nby cricketjeff on July 17, 2008.\u00a0 \u00a9 Jeff Green, All rights reserved<\/p>\n<p>I must walk beside my mistress, on the way to see the moon.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 There&#8217;s a road beside her castle in the sky.<br \/>\nWhen you&#8217;ve crossed the bridge of crystal you&#8217;ll be there so very soon<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 But be sure to ring ahead she&#8217;s rather shy.<br \/>\nIn the castle we are crossing live the maidens of the night,<br \/>\nWho must roam across the milky way to give the stars their light.<\/p>\n<p>My mistress is a supplicant who&#8217;ll ask the moon for love,<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 She has fallen for a poet&#8217;s rhyming words.<br \/>\nSo she&#8217;s dreamed the magic roadway to her goddess up above<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 And she walks beside me singing to the birds.<br \/>\nWhen you&#8217;ve fallen for a poet there&#8217;s so little you can do,<br \/>\nJust dream that you can ask the moon to intercede for you.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nNow she&#8217;s sitting with her goddess, sipping nectar, drinking wine<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 And she&#8217;s asking that her poet falls for her.<br \/>\nThen the goddess tells her kindly just to look out for a sign<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 That the rhymer has a heart he can confer.<br \/>\nAs I eat the magic grasses that are washed by lunar springs<br \/>\nI feel tingling in my backbone where I&#8217;m growing mighty wings.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nNow my mistress mounts me calmly and I fly her back to bed,<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Where her hair is spread like laughter on the sheet.<br \/>\nThere&#8217;s the song of stars and moonlets softly ringing in her head<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 And a feeling that her mission is complete,<br \/>\nAnd she wakes up in the morning to a sonnet and a rose,<br \/>\nThat were left there by a poet with a lovesong to compose.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n Author notes<br \/>\nThe picture is a contest prompt and is from<br \/>\nhttp:\/\/tn3-1.deviantart.com\/fs30\/300W\/f\/2008\/175\/9\/6\/<br \/>\n96d02c863eec8231fb384e2a02652eb7.jpg<\/p>\n<p>Just a brief note on form, on a suggestion from Sue Cardwell I have separated<br \/>\nthe couplets from my ababcc sixaines here to see if that makes the verse appear<br \/>\nless intimidating, I would welcome comments on that. I decided I didn&#8217;t like<br \/>\nit, I have now indented the shorter lines, see how that works.<\/p>\n<p>The meter is based on what I call &#8220;extended ballad measure&#8221; (alternating iambic<br \/>\nheptameter\/iambic pentameter) save that each line starts with an anapaest<br \/>\nrather than an iamb and the couplets consist of a pair of heptameteric lines.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve used the sixaines a couple of times lately (I borrowed them from<br \/>\nShakespeare ) but the exact meter is new to me so comments on that too are<br \/>\nespecially welcome<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As I walk by cricketjeff on July 17, 2008.\u00a0 \u00a9 Jeff Green, All rights reserved I must walk beside my mistress, on the way to see the moon. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 There&#8217;s a road beside her castle in the sky.
