{"id":3203,"date":"2023-11-26T20:27:53","date_gmt":"2023-11-26T20:27:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nicewaistcoat.com\/wordpress\/?page_id=3203"},"modified":"2023-11-28T23:04:46","modified_gmt":"2023-11-28T23:04:46","slug":"the-greatest-gift","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/nicewaistcoat.com\/wordpress\/the-poems\/the-greatest-gift\/","title":{"rendered":"The greatest gift"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> The greatest gift<br \/>\nby cricketjeff on September 6, 2008.\u00a0 \u00a9 Jeff Green, All rights reserved<\/p>\n<p>He raised her high so all could see<br \/>\nBut in a crystal cage<br \/>\nAnd praised her in his poetry<br \/>\nThe wonder of the age<br \/>\nHe said that she was all his life<br \/>\nYet kept her trapped within<br \/>\nWas this the way to treat a wife<br \/>\nOr was it mortal sin<\/p>\n<p>     \u00a0 \u00a0 She laid a trap, her love the bait<br \/>\n     \u00a0 \u00a0 And waited in her lair<br \/>\n     \u00a0 \u00a0 He&#8217;d never guess his final fate<br \/>\n     \u00a0 \u00a0 &#8216;Til she cut off his air<br \/>\n     \u00a0 \u00a0 She said that she would always love<br \/>\n     \u00a0 \u00a0 Yet wanted just to own<br \/>\n     \u00a0 \u00a0 Her touch was iron inside a glove<br \/>\n     \u00a0 \u00a0 Her heart was made of stone<\/p>\n<p>I see each story in the art<br \/>\nBut which of them is true?<br \/>\nWhich lover takes the victim&#8217;s part<br \/>\nAnd which of them is you<br \/>\nNot everything is black and white<br \/>\nThere&#8217;s colours and there&#8217;s grey<br \/>\nSometimes both sides may be quite right<br \/>\nMost lives are built this way<\/p>\n<p>     \u00a0 \u00a0 Your Mother&#8217;s view is not the same<br \/>\n     \u00a0 \u00a0 She doesn&#8217;t have your eyes<br \/>\n     \u00a0 \u00a0 It doesn&#8217;t mean that she&#8217;s to blame<br \/>\n     \u00a0 \u00a0 I&#8217;m pretty sure she tries<br \/>\n     \u00a0 \u00a0 I have four children of my own<br \/>\n     \u00a0 \u00a0 And sometimes we agree<br \/>\n     \u00a0 \u00a0 Their views have changed as they have grown<br \/>\n     \u00a0 \u00a0 They&#8217;re not the same as me<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s very hard, for young and old<br \/>\nTo walk another&#8217;s road<br \/>\nSome metal bars are purest gold<br \/>\nSome just a heavy load<br \/>\nThere&#8217;s just one thing you should recall<br \/>\nWhen she is smart or dumb<br \/>\nI bet she&#8217;ll love you through it all<br \/>\nYour Mum is still your Mum!<br \/>\n Author notes<br \/>\nAlix, a note to you, I am an &#8220;old fart&#8221; my youngest child is now 18, I can see<br \/>\nhow people my age see things, I can ask my children how people their age see<br \/>\nthings, but the only way I can know what you know and see and feel is if you<br \/>\ntell me, so I would be especially grateful for your views on what I write.<\/p>\n<p>The title refers to this Scottish saying:-<\/p>\n<p>The greatest gifts the gods could gie us<br \/>\nTo see ourselves as others see us<\/p>\n<p>Mairi bheag reminds me (I should have remembered, I don&#8217;t foget much poetry)<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s Robert Burns!
