The Hat

\nYoung Osbert Johnson’s throwing stones, to try to sink the hat;
\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 That Jenny Jones’s Mother chose to wear.
\nThe wind was much too playful and it had a feeling that,
\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 The hat would like a journey through the air.
\nIt wasn’t such a little hat, more like a circus tent,
\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 The sort that awful mother’s choose to wear.
\nAnd Osbert Johnson really thought the wind was heaven sent,
\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 That lifted that excrescence in the air.
\nIt danced along the country lane, with Osbert sent to chase,
\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Despite the suit that he was forced to wear.
\nHe ran a mile to catch it, now he’s rather red of face,
\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 And gasping for another breath of air.
\nThe awful hat had settled in the centre of the pond,
\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Though ponds don’t often have a hat to wear,
\nAn idea’s entered Osbert’s head, he knew he would respond,
\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 So now he’s throwing stones into the air.
\nThe third or fourth, perhaps the fifth, was such a perfect shot,
\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 The horrid hat’s no longer there to wear.
\nThe wedding guests arrive in time, to see – well, not a lot
\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Just ripples and some mischief in the air.<\/p>\n
