\nI walked today in footsteps of a child,
\nNew generations playing in the street.
\nThe trees I climbed when I was fresh and wild,
\nNow bent beneath much younger pairs of feet.<\/p>\n
Where once a stream had giggled past the field
\nAnd minnows hid from jamjars held on string,
\nA tarmaced path keeps nature well concealed;
\nModernity has tidied everything.<\/p>\n
The rugby pitch where I first broke a tooth,
\nA driving range where golfers learn to hit.
\nThe lovers den of early misspent youth
\nNow keeps my balding age-group nearly fit.<\/p>\n
Inside my long-ago’s a jumbled pile,
\nConfusing scenes I cannot rearrange;
\nSome memories revived to make me smile
\nAnd others lost beneath unwanted change.<\/p>\n
The sun descends, reflecting off my bus.
\nI shrug and leave a past I cannot own.
\nThe fool in me demands I make a fuss
\nWhile sanity says “leave today alone.”<\/p>\n
In forty years another man may pass –
\nRegretting changes I cannot foresee.
\nThis stretch of lovely green suburban grass
