\nWhen I was young, in fourteen forty four,
\nKing Henry wasn’t really fit to rule.
\nOur Lords thought they could fight for evermore,
\nWhile we just worked to earn a bit of gruel,
\nIf you thought times were good you are a fool!
\nPerhaps we’d live to see a better day,
\nWhen Lords and King were busy far away.<\/p>\n
We learned to wield a bow and how to fight;
\nNo Frenchmen, Scot or Irish matched our skill,
\nThough Lords would treat their underlings with spite
\nWe English fought for riches with a will,
\nPlease tell me that you are not fighting still!
\nAs well as foreign wars we’re fighting here,
\n‘Cause Lancs and Yorks each say their claim is clear<\/p>\n
I’m older now and stand on Bosworth field,
\nWe’re swapping sides to bring an end to war!
\nWhen Henry forces Richard’s troops to yield
\nOur Lords have said we’ll have a little more.
\n(I know, I know! They’ve said the same before!)
\nBut maybe there’ll be peace at home at last,
\nIt’s time we put the fighting in the past.<\/p>\n
This Tudor King is hard as nails it seems,
\nBut fairer than the rabble he’s replaced.
\nPerhaps we’ll be allowed to live our dreams,
\nNot just exist and hope we’re not disgraced –
\nThe troubles we poor peasantry have faced!
\nSo charge your tankard drink a toast in mead,
\n“To Lords whose only motive isn’t greed!”<\/p>\n
