Mistakes like these

\n[Gutted: Part of a derelict psychiatric hospital just north of Birmingham,
\nquite an eerie place.]<\/p>\n
Bare walls still hold the echoes of unwanted tortured dreams,
\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 From minds that couldn’t hold the world at bay.
\nThis room was once the shelter for a man who lived in screams
\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 And never found the strength to run away.<\/p>\n
A mother who, unmarried, wouldn’t give the father’s name,
\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 A child abused and too afraid to speak.
\nSociety’s the patient and its structures are to blame
\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 When nobody will help the poor and weak.<\/p>\n
No lock and key’s the answer to a mind that’s lost in fog;
\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Mistreatment by the world is not disease,
\nBut innocence and ignorance are not a pedagogue,
\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Intransigence is deaf to many pleas.<\/p>\n
Now changes to perceptions have brought closure to the wards;
\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 The tales the walls contained remain untold.
\nNo iron beds or wooden chairs are dragged across the boards,
\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 The grounds where patients walked have now been sold.<\/p>\n
Just here and there a photograph, a memory, a word,
\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Sheds light upon the errors of the past,
\nBut we should not be arrogant, our world is still absurd,
\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Mistakes like these will never be our last.<\/p>\n
