\nLike soldiers in an army some form neatly ordered rows
\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 While others lie in ambush here and there
\nThey’re hoping to ensnare me then they’ll deal their deadly blows
\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 The tactics they employ are rarely fair
\nThe uniforms of regulars attract the roving eye
\nWhile other individuals can make me laugh or cry<\/p>\n
They number in their hundreds here, a thousand more next door
\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 What chance have I against their massed attack
\nThey line the shelves accusingly or pile up on the floor
\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 My books declare they’re ready to strike back
\nThey fight against my ignorance they educate by stealth
\nAs week by week still more arrive and chip away my wealth<\/p>\n
I can’t resist a Wisden or a dictionary of prose
\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 A Shakespeare or all Dickens’ Christmas tales
\nI’ve shelves filled up with physics and a list of West-End shows
\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 And Captain Ahab’s battle with the whales
\nBritannica and OED and Webster’s (leather bound)
\nThere’s Wodehouse if I’m feeling light and Russell if profound<\/p>\n
My Roget’s has seen better days, a history of art
\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0And poetry from Rome to modern day
\nI’m pretty sure that “Ladybirds” were in it at the start
\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 And I could never throw a book away
\nI’m overwhelmed by armies of the English written word
