An army life

\nThey promised him a choice of many trades
\nWith travel round the World, so much to see
\nIt didn’t matter that he’d fluffed his grades
\nThe Army was the place he longed to be<\/p>\n
The barracks where they trained was rather rough
\nDrill sergeants balled and bullies always lurked
\nBut life had taught our hero to be tough
\nHe stood his ground and diligently worked<\/p>\n
Not twenty yet he’s sent abroad to kill
\nWhich wasn’t quite the trade he had in mind
\nEach day in Basra brings a special thrill
\nA sort of thrill he’d like to leave behind<\/p>\n
But many mates make any problem light
\nDespite their foes they all came home all right<\/p>\n
At Aldershot they sent him on\u00a0 a course
\nA signaller (that means a bit more pay)
\nThe chance to use his brains not just brute force
\nThe afterlife is getting under way<\/p>\n
Another tour a medal for his Mum
\nAfghanistan has got a lot to teach
\nHe’d never want to work sat on his bum
\nIt’s better when the World is in your reach<\/p>\n
A roadside bomb, not maimed but changed inside
\nMuch wiser now, he’s ready to return
\nThe Army is a roller coaster ride
\nAnd thrills and spills can show you how to learn<\/p>\n
On civvy street he misses friends and fun
\nBut doesn’t have to fear a hidden gun<\/p>\n
