The rarest blooms

\nBeneath the desert sun there grows a rose
\nA golden bloom above the barren ground
\nSo delicate a beauty seldom shows
\nWhere winds are harsh and water’s seldom found
\nAm I the only traveller who knows
\nThat wonders such as this are all around<\/p>\n
Untroubled by the heat I roamed around
\nWhere weathered hills and valleys stood in rows
\nAn unexpected scent assailed my nose
\nI looked and saw her petals on the ground
\nShould I have plucked the specimen I found
\nAmidst the desert’s other, harsher, shows<\/p>\n
I’ve often heard of larger flower shows
\nAnd other mysteries may lie around
\nBut nothing in the places I have found
\nCompared with where this lonely flower rose
\nFrom out that harshly arid stony ground
\nAnd how it grew there surely no-one knows<\/p>\n
The gardeners I ask all give me noes
\nTheir disbelief in what I tell them shows
\nSuch beauty needs its roots in fertile ground
\nIn deserts there aren’t nutrients around
\nSo lovely plants as tender as that rose
\nCan’t tolerate the sand-scape that I found<\/p>\n
Perhaps it was a dream, I hadn’t found
\nThe perfume I imagined in my nose
\nI didn’t stand before the lifeless rows
\nAnd didn’t see what nature rarely shows
\nDespite these fears I’ll spread my tale around
\nPerhaps some other folk have seen that ground<\/p>\n
Now I have both my feet back on the ground
\nAnd all of you can look at what I found
\nThe greatest treat that nature’s spread around
\nPerhaps you’ll find that dangled by your nose
\nIs what you’ve always thought the best of shows
\nAnd just like me you’ll own a desert rose<\/p>\n
Sestinas may be ground against your nose
\nAnd seldom found where easy reading shows
\nBut some around are pretty as a rose<\/p>\n

\nI thought I’d see if I can still remember how these things work.<\/p>\n
I think I’ve met all the rules, the “hero” words in the correct order and in
\nthe traditional order in the envoi, starting the coda with the words sestina is
\nprobably a little unsubtle for purists.<\/p>\n
I really wanted to do the whole poem in homophones but I couldn’t find six good
