\nSome people don’t care to improve how they write,
\nThat isn’t the reason they’re here.
\nYou tell them “I liked it”, they swoon with delight
\nThat’s all that they’re wanting I fear;
\nBut there are a few who’d move Heaven and Earth
\nTo write down a poem of genuine worth.<\/p>\n
I didn’t believe when I came on this site
\nThat writing could matter to me,
\nI’d penned a few verses and thought them “all right”
\nMore doggerel than true poetry.
\nBut then I encountered some talented folk
\nAnd something long hidden inside me awoke.<\/p>\n
I read all their writing I strove to find more,
\nSo much I did not understand.
\nThe best of the bunch knocked me down on the floor,
\nTill one or two took me in hand.
\nI thought what I loved in the poems I read
\nAnd listened to voices I heard in my head.<\/p>\n
Remembered the rules they had taught me in school
\nAnd dug out some books from my loft.
\nSome poets who read me said “you’re not a fool”,
\nThough maybe their brains had gone soft.
\nI badgered a few of you day after day
\nAnd some didn’t tell me to “just go away”.<\/p>\n
I analysed meter and listened to rhyme,
\nI mimicked the styles of the great,
\nI begged them to criticise time after time,
\nI worked myself into a state.
\nNow maybe I’ve written a verse worth a read
\nAnd hope that in time I shall get up to speed.<\/p>\n
I’ve even tried teaching (I think I’ve a cheek!),
\nI hope that my help’s not a curse.
\nA few say my words have improved their technique
\nAnd no-one says I’ve made them worse.
