The groundsman’s tale

\nEach morning in the summer he is there,
\nSo many jobs for just one pair of hands;
\nAt least he has a wife who understands,
\nFor half the year he’s married to his square.
\nIn playing days he showed a little flare —
\nBut now his grass is mown in tidy bands,
\nThe finest sight in all these sporting lands,
\nA village green for everyone to share.<\/p>\n
On Saturday he rolls his perfect pitch,
\nThen tells the captain “it’ll seam today.”
\nToo busy with his tools to scratch the itch
\nThat every cricket groundsman feels, to play.
\nNow win or lose, it doesn’t matter which,
