The Great Wall of China

\nThe Great Wall of China was closed.<\/p>\n
We went from the office to see
\nThe Wall that the Emperor’s built
\nTo keep their grand enterprise free
\nWhen armies had started to wilt.<\/p>\n
The traffic was painfully slow,
\nBut all of us wanted to go.<\/p>\n
“The cable car’s down for repairs”
\nSo we had to walk on our feet
\nPerhaps they have run out of spares
\nTo make their transporter complete<\/p>\n
It’s really to steep for a walk
\nI ran and was too puffed to talk.<\/p>\n
Then, as we got on it, the rain
\nWas hurled in a storm from the clouds.
\nThe weather can be such a pain,
\nAt least it got rid of the crowds.<\/p>\n
Our party was rapidly hosed
\nThe Great Wall of China was closed<\/p>\n
When soldiers were marching for days
\nTo man all the towers on the wall
\nI doubt they could see through the haze
\nNo wonder their empire would fall<\/p>\n
It’s such a magnificent sight
\nI wish I could walk it by night<\/p>\n
Some places are battered and bust
\nThey’ve rebuilt and mended the rest
\nA visit to see it’s a must
\nTo walk it’s a terrible test!<\/p>\n
Though Beijing is stuffy and hot
\nThe wall can make up for a lot<\/p>\n
And now I’ve left China behind
\nFor London, for forks and for tea
\nThe wall will live long in my mind
\nIt’s something you just have to see<\/p>\n
I know that there’s lots more to see
\nNext time maybe you’ll come with me<\/p>\n
And if you can go there yourself
\nBe careful to pick the right date
\nThe guidebook is there on the shelf
\nSo check it (or ring up a mate)<\/p>\n
I’m sure there’s a place they’ll disclose
\nThe days that The Great Wall will close!<\/p>\n
