rights reserved<br \/>\nFirst Hydrogen the lightest gas<br \/>\nThat makes up for its lack of mass<br \/>\nBy forming most of all we see<br \/>\nIn this or any galaxy<br \/>\nIn chemistry it isn&#8217;t placid<br \/>\nIts cation does the work of acid<br \/>\nIn bombs it leads to greater slaughter<br \/>\nBut most important it&#8217;s in water!<\/p>\n<p>Then Helium at number two<br \/>\nFinds very little it can do<br \/>\nInert in almost every way<br \/>\nSo I have little else to say<\/p>\n<p>Now Lithium that&#8217;s soft and bright<br \/>\nMakes alloys that are very light<br \/>\nIts salts can make your fireworks red<br \/>\nThere&#8217;s not much else needs to be said<\/p>\n<p>Beryllium has such toxic dust<br \/>\nThat special measures are a must<br \/>\nIt used to be used quite a lot<br \/>\nIn copper alloys that got hot<br \/>\nBut now we know it makes you ill<br \/>\nFew industries will use it still<\/p>\n<p>Boron&#8217;s always black and hard<br \/>\nAnd stuff you shouldn&#8217;t disregard<br \/>\nIn borax it will wash your eyes<br \/>\nIn fibres it&#8217;s a great surprise<br \/>\nA golf club or a lightweight tank<br \/>\nMay have this element to thank<\/p>\n<p>Carbon, of course, is here for life<br \/>\nAnd diamonds make the sharpest knife<br \/>\nIn pencils people call it lead<br \/>\nWhich shows they must be off their head<br \/>\nIt forms long chains, all on its own<br \/>\nAnd complex shapes that can be shown<\/p>\n<p>Nitrogen&#8217;s next, it&#8217;s bland and clear<br \/>\nAnd forms most of our atmosphere<br \/>\nAmmonia, and stuff for bombs<br \/>\nAnd fertilizer for your toms<br \/>\nAll need this elemental stuff<br \/>\nI&#8217;m pleased to say we have enough<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s oxygen at number eight<br \/>\nWe like it in its gaseous state<br \/>\nAlthough it lets our buildings burn<br \/>\nWe need it as we quickly learn<br \/>\nThe third most common stuff there is<br \/>\nIt gives much chemistry its fizz<\/p>\n<p>Fluorine is very bad for you<br \/>\nIt changes skin to useless goo<br \/>\nIn non-stick teflon it&#8217;s the part<br \/>\nThat mean adhesion cannot start<br \/>\nAlone reacts with anything<br \/>\nPerhaps the elemental king<\/p>\n<p>Neon gives an eerie glow<br \/>\nTo signs as all of you will know<br \/>\nSo noble in it&#8217;s chemistry<br \/>\nThere are no compounds you can see<\/p>\n<p>Sodium burns with yellow flame<br \/>\nIgnites in water what a game<br \/>\nYou can be sure it&#8217;s never damp<br \/>\nInside that eerie yellow lamp<br \/>\nWith chlorine it makes salt for chips<br \/>\nAnd&#8217;s softer than your fingertips<\/p>\n<p>Magnesium flashes into light<br \/>\nFew other flames are half as bright<br \/>\nIn alloys used in cars and planes<br \/>\nIt leads to unexpected gains<br \/>\nPlants put it into chlorophyll<br \/>\nWithout it you&#8217;d be very ill!<\/p>\n<p>Aluminium it&#8217;s called<br \/>\n(Americans will be appalled)<br \/>\nIt&#8217;s strong and light and forms a skin<br \/>\nThat stops corrosives getting in<br \/>\nLike all the rest it&#8217;s made in stars<br \/>\nWe use it in our planes and cars<\/p>\n<p>A tetravalent metalloid<br \/>\nIt seems nobody can avoid<br \/>\nThe modern world needs Silicon<br \/>\nWith clever patterns etched upon<br \/>\nAlthough these chips seem quite enough<br \/>\nIt gives us glass and other stuff<\/p>\n<p>Now phosphorus which has a glow<br \/>\nGives every safety match its go<br \/>\nIt&#8217;s used for flares and screening smoke<br \/>\nIts acid give the fizz to coke<br \/>\nSince it is in all life on Earth<br \/>\nYou know quite what the stuff is worth<\/p>\n<p>Now sulphur compounds often smell<br \/>\nAs brimstone it&#8217;s a sign of hell<br \/>\nA pretty yellow on its own<br \/>\nMore allotropes than any known<br \/>\nIn life it takes a major role<br \/>\nMakes dirty smoke when burning coal<\/p>\n<p>Next chlorine gas that&#8217;s murky green<br \/>\nIts use on troops was very mean<br \/>\nIt kills the bugs in swimming pools<br \/>\nIt&#8217;s found in many molecules<br \/>\nIn paint stripper and cleaning stuff<br \/>\nThat man has used more than enough<\/p>\n<p>The argon verse is hard for me<br \/>\nIt has so little chemistry<br \/>\nBut we may sometimes use this fact<br \/>\nAs filler so things won&#8217;t react<\/p>\n<p>Potassium has symbol K<br \/>\nAn element that likes to play<br \/>\nA soft and silvery metal which<br \/>\nReacts upon the slightest twitch<br \/>\nIt even burns in nitrogen<br \/>\nWhich can confuse unlearned men<br \/>\nWe need a fair bit to survive<br \/>\nIt&#8217;s part of everything alive.<\/p>\n<p>If you have written things with chalk<br \/>\nOr if you like to stand and walk<br \/>\nThen calcium is in your life<br \/>\nIts all around and use is rife<br \/>\nA carbonate is called limestone<br \/>\nIts phosphate makes up most of bone<br \/>\nIt furs your kettle, and your pipes<br \/>\nSo fuels a lot of plumbers gripes<\/p>\n<p>Transition metals form a block<br \/>\nWhose properties we&#8217;ll now unlock<br \/>\nFirst scandium is rather rare<br \/>\nHas just one use that I&#8217;m aware<br \/>\nIn aluminium alloys<br \/>\nThe aircraft industry employs<\/p>\n<p>Its strength for weight the highest known<br \/>\nWill be in many things you own<br \/>\nTitanium is common stuff<br \/>\nBut most rocks don&#8217;t contain enough<br \/>\nIt&#8217;s oxide is the white in paint<br \/>\nSo many uses that you best<br \/>\nGo look it up, I&#8217;ll be impressed<\/p>\n<p>Vanadium&#8217;s another one<br \/>\nI hope you find this journey fun<br \/>\nIt&#8217;s used in steels for tools and such<br \/>\nThere&#8217;s some in you, but not too much<\/p>\n<p>You all know Chromium by shine<br \/>\nSo plated parts can look quite fine<br \/>\nIts compounds come in every hue<br \/>\nPerhaps we&#8217;ve time to list a few<br \/>\nThe very orange dichromate<br \/>\nCan change its oxidation state<br \/>\nAnd then a deep and dirty green<br \/>\nWill be the colour you have seen<br \/>\nMakes rubies red and mauves untamed<br \/>\nYou&#8217;ll see how chromium was named<\/p>\n<p>So now give Manganese a turn<br \/>\nA metal that we cannot spurn<br \/>\nEssential to the life we live<br \/>\nWith many other gifts to give<br \/>\nYou need it to make stainless steel<br \/>\nIt can give glass a &#8220;rose appeal&#8221;<br \/>\nSome feminists may whisper &#8220;please<br \/>\nCan we now have Womanganese?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s Iron next which had an age<br \/>\nThat set us on this modern stage<br \/>\nA revolution came to be<br \/>\nIn Britain&#8217;s iron industry<br \/>\nProducing steel that changed the world<br \/>\nAnd empire banners soon unfurled<br \/>\nYou can&#8217;t make tanks or guns or planes<br \/>\nWithout this metal&#8217;s famous strains<br \/>\nIt&#8217;s also part of me and you<br \/>\n(Anaemia should give a clue)<br \/>\nThe final fuel of dying stars<br \/>\nIt gives the rusty hue to Mars<br \/>\nOf all that&#8217;s underneath the sky<br \/>\nIt has the stablest nuclei!<\/p>\n<p>Who hasn&#8217;t heard of Cobalt blue<br \/>\nPerhaps it&#8217;s nature&#8217;s finest hue<br \/>\nProsthetic hips or so I&#8217;m told<br \/>\nNeed cobalt or they can&#8217;t be sold<br \/>\nMagnetic metals and in planes<br \/>\n(In super alloy turbine vanes)<br \/>\nWe need it too for vitamins<br \/>\nWithout B12 nobody wins!<\/p>\n<p>A metal with so many uses<br \/>\nDoesn&#8217;t need to make excuses<br \/>\nWe put it into coins and steels<br \/>\nIn forks and spoons and alloy wheels<br \/>\nA catalyst for many things<br \/>\nAnd helps to toughen wedding rings<br \/>\nSo buy some Nickel mining shares<br \/>\nWe need it for so many wares<\/p>\n<p>Ten thousand years ago, or so<br \/>\nA copper pendant went on show<br \/>\nThough meteroic iron and gold<br \/>\nAre many dozen times as old<br \/>\nWe think that copper was refined<br \/>\nBefore most other things were mined<br \/>\nIt&#8217;s soft and yellow when it&#8217;s pure<br \/>\nBut Zinc or Tin effect a cure<br \/>\nAnd Bronze age people found this out<br \/>\nIt gave their weapons added clout.<br \/>\nA great conductor (not of bands)<br \/>\nIt&#8217;s useful in so many hands.<\/p>\n<p>I wonder if you ever think<br \/>\nAbout the ways that we use zinc<br \/>\nIn galvanising iron and steel<br \/>\nIn sheets on roofs (that bad guys steel)<br \/>\nDeodorants and fancy paints<br \/>\nAnd statues of some famous saints<br \/>\nIt protects iron exposed to seas<br \/>\nA lot is used in batteries<\/p>\n<p>Pure Gallium just loves to melt<br \/>\nThe strangest metal ever felt<br \/>\nA first as hard as any plate<br \/>\nThen suddenly in liquid state<br \/>\nIts arsenide makes diodes glow<br \/>\nIts nitride puts bright blue on show<br \/>\nThermometers with lots of range<br \/>\nMakes other metals turn quite strange<\/p>\n<p>Germanium is not a flower<br \/>\nIts used to capture solar power<br \/>\nTransistors, diodes lots of stuff<br \/>\nFibre optics all that guff<br \/>\nThese days it isn&#8217;t used as much<br \/>\nReplaced by silicon and such<\/p>\n<p>If you have read detective tales<br \/>\nYou&#8217;ll know that Arsenic derails<br \/>\nThe lives of victims by the score<br \/>\nOf poisoners we should deplore<br \/>\nNapoleon, some think, was killed<br \/>\nBy poison his wallpaper spilled<br \/>\nThe ink contained some &#8220;Paris Green&#8221;<br \/>\n(Perhaps he just missed Josephine)<br \/>\nComputer makers use a lot<br \/>\nAnd strangely some is in lead shot.<\/p>\n<p>Selenium can make things stink<br \/>\nIt&#8217;s more important than you think<br \/>\nWe have to eat a little bit<br \/>\nTo keep out bodies fighting fit<br \/>\nReplacing lead in plumbers brass<br \/>\nAnd making reddish tones in glass<\/p>\n<p>You won&#8217;t spill Bromine if you&#8217;re wise<br \/>\nIts caustic vapours hurt the eyes<br \/>\nIt&#8217;s liquid and it&#8217;s reddish brown<br \/>\nIn compounds it slows fires down<br \/>\nIt&#8217;s put in lenses and some pools<br \/>\nBut other uses now break rules<\/p>\n<p>A noble gas called Krypton&#8217;s next<br \/>\nAnother verse that leaves me vexed<br \/>\nIn discharge lamps it&#8217;s almost white<br \/>\nYou&#8217;ll see it on large signs at night<br \/>\nIt will react with fluorine, though<br \/>\nThat&#8217;s not a lot to put on show!<\/p>\n<p>Rubidium adds a purple flash<br \/>\nIn fireworks that bang and crash<br \/>\nExplodes in water, burns in air<br \/>\nSo handle it with utmost care!<\/p>\n<p>In TV tubes to stop X-rays<br \/>\n(A use that&#8217;s rather rare these days)<br \/>\nIt&#8217;s isotopes near Chernobyl<br \/>\nHave made a lot of people ill<br \/>\nBut Strontium cures cancer too<br \/>\nTo give this element its due<\/p>\n<p>Next Yttrium, with symbol Y<br \/>\nAn element that&#8217;s rather shy<br \/>\nIn other metals&#8217; ores it hides<br \/>\n(particularly the Lanthanides)<br \/>\nIn garnets and in new alloys<br \/>\nThis metal now makes quite a noise.<\/p>\n<p>Zirconium is not that rare<br \/>\nAnd zircons turn up everywhere<br \/>\nAs tiny bubbles locked n rocks<br \/>\nWhich give us natures oldest clocks<br \/>\nIn some old flash bulbs burned so bright<br \/>\nIt gave photographers their light<br \/>\nAnd round the necks of gorgeous girls<br \/>\nZirconias far outshine pearls!<\/p>\n<p>Niobium has changed its name<br \/>\nColumbium should own the fame<br \/>\nBut either name performs quite well<br \/>\nIn alloys such as inconel<br \/>\nIn jets and rockets takes the heat<br \/>\nNo other metal has it beat<br \/>\nAnd some alloys when very cold<br \/>\nAre superconductors I&#8217;ve been told<\/p>\n<p>In austenitic stainless steels<br \/>\nAnd as disulphide greasing wheels<br \/>\nMolybdenum is all around<br \/>\nSo many uses have been found<br \/>\nMost living things contain a tad<br \/>\nWithout it you&#8217;d be feeling almost every time it&#8217;s seen<br \/>\nPraseodymium makes green<br \/>\nBut being such a curious fellow<br \/>\nIt&#8217;s used to make ceramics yellow!<\/p>\n<p>For MRIs your blood may be infused<br \/>\nAnd Gadolinium is often used<br \/>\nIt&#8217;s also found in radiation shields<br \/>\nReduction harmful thermal neutron yields<\/p>\n<p>With Copernicium I&#8217;ll end<br \/>\nThe
