In Praise of Phil Woolas

\nHe thought he may lose so he told a few lies
\nAnd doctored some pictures to help win a prize
\nIt’s really amazing what perfidy buys
\nAnd Phil tells us all it was fair<\/p>\n
His Lib’ral opponent was no terrorist
\nAs Phil and his agent would like to insist
\nBut some subtle options are hard to resist
\nWho cares if they’re not really fair<\/p>\n
The law was quite clear, and he used to help make it
\nBut what is so wrong about working to break it
\nIf a wish isn’t true then it’s easy to fake it
\nDishonest but Phil didn’t care<\/p>\n
Too bad that a judge thought the law could be used
\nHe found for the plaintiff and not the accused
\nThe lies that Phil told would not be excused
\nHe suddenly started to care<\/p>\n
A liar and cheat may be known as a fraud
\nIt’s not the behaviour we like to applaud
\nBut Phil wants to keep all the profits he scored
\nHe says only that would be fair<\/p>\n
His party are shocked and he’s out on his ear
\nBut Phil’s not alarmed he’ll appeal and be clear
\nOpponents and voters have plenty to fear
\nHe doesn’t intend to play fair<\/p>\n
He claims he should keep what he cheated to win
\nElectors weren’t harmed by his obvious sin
\nAs arguments go that is terribly thin
\nBut Phil claims he isn’t aware<\/p>\n
Some old politicians are clearly dismayed
\nPerhaps blatant lies are the stock of their trade
\nBut I live in hope their excesses are stayed
\nI hope that from now they’ll play fair<\/p>\n

\nAn MP and ex-government minister, Philip J Woolas, has been found guilty of
\ndeliberately lying about an opponent in his election material (he tried to
\nimply he was supported by terrorists, had been arrested by armed police and was
\nsupported by foreign “shock horror” Muslim donors) it was rather hard to argue
\nthe accusations weren’t true given he had had thousands of copies printed and
\ndistributed …
\nAs a result he has been barred from office for three years and the election
\ncourt has ordered the election rerun. Legally there is no appeal but he has
