\nIt isn’t always easy when your bones are past their best
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 To laugh away the troubles of the day
\nWhen all is bright and breezy she applies her self with zest
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 But other times her mojo ebbs away
\nYet over all these ages she has never let them down
\nOn tours through country byways or on shopping trips to town<\/p>\n
She used to take the doctor to his patients day or night
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 He never paused to doubt that she would start
\nJust throw the starting handle with the mixture set just right
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 And listen to her steady beating heart
\nOver hills on winter evenings twisting lanes in driving rain
\nWhenever she was needed she would play her part again<\/p>\n
Through the war she towed a tender fighting fires and saving lives
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Her shiny paint now dulled to dirty green
\nAn ambulance for children and for soldier’s pregnant wives
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Wherever she was needed she’d be seen
\nShe missed the happy picnics and romantic weekend trips
\nThe summers by the seaside on the cliff-top watching ships<\/p>\n
Then when the war was over she was hurried back to work
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 With other little jobs to pass the time
\nThe Doctor’s pretty daughter met a man she called The Turk
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The village wedding bells began to chime
\nShe took them to the altar and then on that day in June
\nShe took them off to Brighton for a happy honeymoon<\/p>\n
The Doctor had replaced her but the daughter kept her near
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 An easy automotive middle age
\nShe lost so many sisters and saw modern cars appear
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 But for her friends she still held centre stage
\nAnother generation learned to love her leather seats
\nWith “Are we nearly there yet”s on another round of treats<\/p>\n
These children soon had children and the eldest of the crew
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 So loved the long black lady of the road
\nThat he took her from his Granny (with her blessing it is true)
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 And turned her into treasure to be showed
\nSo now she’s on a day trip down to Goodwood she was told
\nWhere she’ll outshine all others and return home wearing gold!<\/p>\n
